Bangkok: Forms Of Transportation

Bangkok is known as the "City of Angels", is the capital of Thailand. It is also the largest urban area and biggest city of Thailand. During the sixteenth century, it was just a small trading post at the mouth of Chao Phraya River. It only became the capital after the burning of Ayutthaya, the former capital. Since then, Bangkok has become the target of European colonizers but it became a barrier to invading Europeans. Because of this, it became known as an independent, dynamic and influential city. Since then, it grew and became the political, social and economical center not only of Thailand but also of Indochina and the Southeast Asia. During the 1980's and 1990's the city became a regional force in finance and business because many multinational companies moved their regional office here. In 2009, it became second to Singapore as the most expensive city in Southeast Asia.
Bangkok is also known as the Venice of the East because of its elaborate network of canals, known as khlongs, and the use of boats as the means of transportation during a certain time. Most of the khlongs have been filled in and made into streets but many still exist and populated with people. The most popular khlong is the floating market in Taling Chan District. Here, markets are operated along the banks and on boats.
Bangkok is also notorious for its traffic jams. The elevated highways, new roads and intersection were not able to alleviate heavy traffic because the number of private vehicles keeps on increasing. Public bus is provided by the Bangkok Mass Transport Authority. They operate many buses with cheap fares throughout the city and its neighboring provinces.
The city also makes use of the rail system. An MRT system connects the northern Bang Sue station to the central Hua Lamphong while going through the eastern part of the city. There is also the newly built, high speed elevated system called the Suvarnabhumi Airport Link which links the city to the Suvarnabhumi Airport. There are also plans for additional rail systems to be built to make travelling around in and around Bangkok faster and more convenient.
Bangkok is also has one of Asia's most important airport. In 2005, Don Mueang International Airport, considered as one of the oldest airport in the world, was servicing more than ninety airlines. But in 2006, Don Mueang was replaced by Suvarnabhumi Airport. The new airport features a 434-ft tall control tower which is the tallest in Asia. To date, there are still plans of expanding the airport and put up an additional terminal to accommodate fifteen million more passengers. Don Muaeng continues to be used by the Royal Thai Air Force. It is also used by low-cost airlines offering cheap Bangkok flights in order to ease congestion at the new airport.
